Wood Chip Compost

This wood chip compost (not mulch!) is intended for composting and it will vary in the stage of composting and will contain a large quantity of mycorrhizal fungi. This makes an excellent addition to your garden compost bin or can be used to mix with on site soils to add additional nutrients. Wood chips are generally 200:1 carbon to nitrogen, although more coniferous woodchips can be higher up to 600:1. Our wood chips are sourced from local arborists are generally pretty balanced due to the stage of composting.

Wood chips are very effective ground cover to prevent surface moisture loss and encourage healthy microbes and good soil health. Plants should not be planted directly in the wood chips, but the wood chips can be built up around the bases of the plants after planting. Wood chips that are not composted will consume available nitrogen so additional nitrogen rich fertilizers, like our horse manure, are very helpful to be mixed with the soil. Wood chips that are not fully composted will also be slightly acidic and provide excellent balance to more alkaline animal manure.
